Overview of Taylor Park, ColoradoTaylor Park, situated in the Gunnison National Forest near Almont and Crested Butte, is renowned as an off-road paradise for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and Jeeps. Centered around the scenic Taylor Park Reservoir at elevations ranging from 9,400 to 12,000 feet, the area boasts approximately 100 miles of trails, offering a mix of wide, smooth dirt roads, narrow single tracks with rocks, steep hills, and forested paths.
The terrain includes loose dirt, hard pack, mud, dust, rocks, trees, berms, and occasional small jumps, with plenty of shade and minimal hazards (use caution as some may be marked).
It’s ideal for extended vacations, allowing riders to base in one spot without relocating camp, and combines riding with activities like fishing for trout in the reservoir or exploring historic mining sites and ghost towns.
Access and CampingAccess Taylor Park via Taylor River Road (County Road 742), a wide, easy gravel route from Gunnison: head north on CO 135 for 10 miles, then right on CR 742 for 23 miles.
This road serves as the main entry to northern trails, passing the reservoir. Camping is abundant along the Taylor River, considered some of the best in the country, with developed sites only (fees around $26/night for tents or RVs, plus $10 for electric at spots like Lakeview Campground).
No services are available in the park itself, so stock up in nearby towns; the trading post provides gas, food, and OHV permits.
Riding Regulations Trails are open mid-May to late November, weather permitting (best in late summer; snow/mud possible in July).
A Colorado OHV sticker or non-resident permit is required (no out-of-state stickers accepted).
Vehicles need a spark arrestor and must meet a 96 dB noise limit. No width restrictions, but stay on trails—no blazing allowed. Night riding status is unknown; camp in developed sites only.
All trails are accessible from central areas like the trading post, and using a map or GPS is recommended for loops.
